Oppositional Defiant Treatment

Oppositional Defiant Disorder Treatment is most often a combination of behavior therapy for the child, family therapy with the parents, siblings and the problem child, and additional parental training for the adults. Another available treatment sometimes included is the often controversial prescribing of Retinlin. Retinlin is most commonly prescribed for children with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) which is sometimes intertwined with Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

The idea of the behavior therapy is to reduce the frequency and severity of the problem behaviors. The worst behavior patterns would be stressed and tackled first. Often being a behavior that can hurt the child or others, or cause damage around him, it’s a good idea to start with the most disruptive, destructive behavior.

Good acceptable behavior is rewarded, thus a positive outcome results from appropriate behavior. The general train of thought is that this will encourage the good behavior and eventually eliminate the bad behavior entirely.

Often times, the therapist wants to work alone with the child in the beginning. The therapist may want to work with the parents and other family members alone without the problem child in the beginning. Family group sessions which include the child with the behavior problem will be added to the therapy program. It is imperative that the family and parents have time alone with the therapist so they may learn how the therapy will work and play a part in the training at home away from the professional setting.

Parents often need to correct some of their own behavior. This does not mean they are bad parents; often their behavior or reaction to the child’s behavior is not the correct reaction, regardless of the best of intentions. I may actually be encouraging the difficult defiant disorder.

Sometimes small changes in the parent’s actions and reactions to the child or even making time for one on one time with the child can make a huge difference. Older siblings can also learn b behavior that will help to train their difficult and disruptive sibling.

Being as a difficult child is a problem for the entire family, having the entire family involved in the treatment program is rewarding for all. The common goal is to have a happier family life where everyone works together for the well being of all.

Ritalin, a mild central nervous system stimulant, is sometimes administered for Oppositional Defiant Disorder in addition to Attention Deficit Disorder. It affects chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control.

The question of whether or not to use this drug (or other similar ones) is between the parents and their physician. The jury is still out on the long term effects of such a drugs and it should not be administered without much discussion and thought. Many parents are concerned that this artificial calming of the child may take away some of the personality and creativity of the child. Some parents are strictly against anything unnatural.

Educating oneself on the subject and discussing it intensely with the physician can help one make this decision, should it be decided that it could positively help your child. A behaved child can learn more easily, and the well adjusted child in the classroom is definitely a happier child.

For the treatment of the child with Oppositional Defiant Disorder, the parent should ask many questions and find out as much as they can about the behavior problem. Often times, it is a phase which will be outgrown. The more information one has on the subject will enable the parents to determine if this is a behavioral disorder that requires treatment or if it is a natural phase in your child’s development.

We’re never too old to learn, and learning to be a better parent is not something to shy from. Experts have lots of experience with various personality types and behavior disorders and it is wise to take their advice.

Just imagine, your youngster’s behavior problems may be a blessing in disguise. The entire family may learn simple ways to work together better and have a happier home life.

Adoption – A Wonderful Alternative

Are you and your spouse planning for a baby? If yes, then you are probably engulfed by the variety of options to choose from to become a parent. While most people naturally want their own biological child, remember that you also can exercise your right to adopt.

I will be honest with you – I myself had never thought of adopting until a short time ago. Being married for a considerable length of time, and not having any problems in getting pregnant, I just took it for granted, like everyone else, that I would always have my own children. With the medical field having so many successes in artificial reproduction methods and surrogacy, I felt that there were always means to have your own children. Adoption, I supposed quite insularly, was only for the unconventional folks or those who have met with multiple failures in their journey to become a parent.

It was my lack of education and experience, I believe, that I slotted adoption as a backup plan for couples trying to build a family. I didn’t know anyone in my circle of friends and family or distant relatives or acquaintances who had adopted children just because they had felt the urge to do so. Things changed, once I met my friend Kate.

Kate and her hubby have led a happy life for quite some time now. To the best of their knowledge, they have had no issues in conceiving or  parenting a biological child. And yet, they have decided to take the adoption route to build their family. When Kate broke this piece of news over coffee one day, I was left bewildered. But why, I asked. Why would she and Mike choose this complicated path when they could just get pregnant? And why ride a roller coaster ride of emotions that comes with adoption, when it was undeniably simple to bear their own kids?
Amused, Kate explained. She talked about how she and Mike arrived at the decision to adopt. It was a simple emotion of wanting to make a difference to someone in a world that has become disparate. To them, it is a small but sure way to return to the society the fortuity that they have received from the world. Kate and Mike believe that we ourselves can make the world a better place for our children and each of us has our own path to take. For them, it is adoption. It looks like a wonderful opportunity to give and receive love. They are committed to providing a stable loving family to children who might been shuttled among foster care homes with bleak chances of ever finding a family to belong to.

If you have ever wanted to transform a child’s life or even your own, then think about adoption. True, it is a little complicated and there are issues to discuss and problems to overcome, but it is well worth your time and effort and love. Talk to your partner and visit some adoption centers. Go through some counseling sessions to see if you are truly committed to it. Seek guidance from couples who have adopted and maybe that will empower you to embark upon this journey of love and acceptance.

Grooming & Relation Building Tips with Kids

A well behaved kid, is the desire of every parent. However, it is difficult to wonder, if the same can be achieved without being a little harsh or strict towards them. Excessive disciplinary action towards them could affect their normal behavior. Although it seems likes we are asking for too much, it is possible to have a well-behaved and happy toddler by following some simple rules. The way we react to our child’s behavior teaches them a lot.

1. Firstly, Find Out What’s Really Frustrating Your Kid

A lot of times, kids at age are frustrated on account of their inability to express themselves. Teaching your little one how to sign a few key words — such as more, food, milk, and tired — can work wonders.

2.Learn to Give Your Toddler Some Space

Several times kids need to vent their anger. At that time, it’s best to give them their space.

3.Never Resort to Spanking

By spanking them, you are teaching them to handle their anger in that way. The next time you feel the urge to spank, take a deep breath instead and consider what you want your toddler to learn.

4.Speak Calmly and Practice Self Control

Talking in a soothing voice shows your toddler that you’re not going to let her behavior get to you. What helps your child learn is when your response shows her a different, more constructive way to handle these feelings.

5. Create a Diversion

Children have very short attention spans -which means they’re usually easy to divert. And it ALWAYShelps.

6.Hugs are Very Beneficial

Hugs make kids feel secure and let them know that you care about them, even if you don’t agree with their behavior.

7.Talk about Feelings and How to Cope

Read books and notice aloud how the characters are feeling: ‘The dog is really happy that he got a bone.’ And share your own feelings. When your child can label how he is feeling, it helps him gain control over his emotions and communicate them to others.

8.You Can Teach Them Ways to Express Their Anger

Cuddle up in some cozy corner of home or draw a picture or some other strategy that you feel is appropriate.  Teach your child that there are many ways to express his feelings in healthy, non-hurtful ways.

9.Empathize with Your Toddler

If your little one has to wait until his meal has cooled down, show him the steam rising from the bowl. Tell him that when the steam goes away, you can test the meal on a spoon to see if it is cool enough.

10. Use Timers

If there are 2 or more kids playing, give them each a few minutes, using the timer, to play with a toy they both want

11.Let them make their own choices

Let them choose, appropriate to their age, what to wear, and what to eat (within reason), what to play, whom to play with. This gives them a feeling of control and supports their growing confidence and sense of competency, the belief that “I can do it”.

12.Help them ‘Practise’ Self-Control.

There are many daily moments when you can teach your child this skill. For example, games that require turn-taking are great for practicing how to wait and share. Rolling a ball back and forth is an example.

It’s a good idea to keep your response ready for situations, which typically occur often. That way, you will find yourselves being caught off-guard in fewer situations.  Besides having a far better-behaved toddler, you will also find yourself a lot calmer. Remember, Moms are not judged by the way their kids behave, but by how they behave when their kids behave badly.

Simple Tips for Keeping Your Nanny Happy

When it comes to getting the most out of any relationship with the nanny, it is important to remember that the responsibility runs two ways.  According to the experts at www.rockmybabynannyagency.co.uk, one of the biggest mistakes made by so many families is that of treating nannies a little like autonomous robots who exist to serve and to serve alone. In such instances, it usually isn’t long before the relationship hits turbulence and problems begin to affect everyone involved.

All of which is something of a shame, given the fact that building and maintaining excellent relations with the nanny really isn’t difficult. It simply requires a bit of effort from both sides, in order to ensure that everyone gets the very most out of the relationship. The moment a nanny is taken for granted is the moment they will find it fundamentally impossible to go about their duties with any real sense of satisfaction.

So for the benefit of those currently employing nannies or considering taking on a child carer in the near future, here’s a brief rundown of some of the simplest yet most important tips of all for keeping your nanny happy and building the best possible relationship for the family:

  1. Punctuality – First and foremost, it is of critical importance to remember that your nanny’s personal life outside of work is every bit as important as your own. It may seem relatively insignificant to you if you are occasionally 20 or 30 minutes late home, in turn requiring the nanny to hang around longer than they were supposed to. However, all this shows your nanny is that you value your own time and schedule much more highly than theirs, with little regard for their own plans and commitments. Paying for overtime is of course mandatory, but cannot compensate for a clear lack of respect/regard.
  2. Feedback – If there is anything the nanny is doing or not doing that goes against your preferences, it is up to you and you alone to bring it to their attention. It is completely counterproductive to allow anything to continue that doesn’t suit your parental style, when it could be easilybe addressed with a few words. There’s every chance that the nanny in question simply didn’t realise they were doing anything wrong – it could also be that you never actually told them how it was supposed to be done.
  3. Pay Well – There will always be something of a standard salary/hourly wage any professional nanny will expect when securing a job. However, if the nanny currently in your employment is genuinely exceptional and you would prefer them to stick around long-term, you might want to think about paying them a slightly higher than average wage. In addition to this, never overlook the value and importance of occasional bonuses, just as tokens of appreciation for a job well done. Something as simple as a gift card or an unscheduled day off really can show a nanny how appreciated they are and massively boost motivation.
  4. Unite – When the parents and the nanny are all at home together at the same time, it is of critical importance never to have any disputes in front of the children. To contradict the nanny in front of the children is to give the kids the impression that they do not in fact have the power or authority they need to successfully get the job done. If there is something that needs to be said, it should be said ‘off camera’ and away from the children.
  5. Ask for Input – The overwhelming majority of instructions and requirements will be laid down by the parents, but it is also a good idea to ask for input from the nanny. The very nature of the nanny’s daily duties means that they will be spending a lot of time both with the kids and looking after the household in general. As such, they may have valuable insights and ideas on how to improve things, the likes of which the parents themselves may never have thought of.
  6. Communicate – Last but not least, quite often the single most important rule as far as the professionals are concerned is that of maintaining strong and constant communication at all times. The more you talk to your nanny and the more honest you are with them on a consistent basis, the more you stand to find out about everything they do, everything they are and how they feel about their responsibilities. What’s more, it is imperative that your nanny knows that when and where there is anything they need to bring to your attention, they can do so confidently and happily.

Handy Tips for New Mums Feeling the Strain

Being a mum is the most rewarding role in the world and there is nothing as strong as the bond between a new mum and her baby. However, new mums have a lot to deal with and the pressure of taking care of a baby can be immense. We all deal with the stresses and strains of being a parent differently and for some mums, it can be overwhelming. If you are feeling the pressure of being a new mother, then don’t worry as this is a completely natural way to feel and many women will go through the same emotions.

There are a few things that you can do to help to relieve the strain and to help you to enjoy being a new mum, so let’s take a look at some of these things now:

Relax

The first thing to do is to teach yourself to relax. It is easy to go into overdrive, as you have to remember 101 new jobs that you have never had to think about before from feeding times to nappy changes and it can be exhausting.

Here are some tips on how to better manage your time:

  • Write down a daily schedule that you can look at periodically to help you to remember what needs to be done and when throughout the day, so you are not constantly worrying that you might haveforgotten something
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help from your support system, so that you can take some time out to have a bath or read your book for an hour
  • Take a few deep breaths when they are crying or not taking to your nipple, as even the harder parts of motherhood are all part of the experience of being a new mum

Change of Scenery

Taking care of a baby is hard work and breaking up the long days with a walk outside is great for both of you. A little gentle exercise for you plus some fresh air for your baby can also be a good way to help you to bond.

Don’t be so Hard on Yourself

Many new mums feel a lot of pressure because they take on too much responsibility. Don’t worry if the washing doesn’t get hung up for another hour, don’t panic that the dishwasher needs emptying and forget about making your bed. It is far more important to spend valuable time taking care of your baby and overloading your schedule with regular chores will be overwhelming.

Eat Healthily

It is tempting to grab snacks and fast food when you are a new mum but eating healthily will help with the following:

  • To give you more energy
  • To make you feel better about yourself
  • To ensure your baby is healthy if you are breastfeeding

Try to remember that you are not Superwoman and it is normal to feel tired as a new mum but the more you can relax into your new role, the more you will enjoy the entire experience – even on your most tired days.

Talk as a family

Getting a child to talk about school and or daily life in general can be like pulling teeth. Communication is everything when it comes to supporting a child. If they’re having trouble with a subject or facing bullies at school, children tend to keep quiet, a child needs to find a safe channel through which to talk. A parent can help a child find their voice in order to help them through tough times. Likewise, if your child achieved a goal, sharing good news is equally valuable.

Open communication starts at home. Keep a comfy chair in a child’s room beside their bed for bedtime stories and nightly chats. Doing things as a family helps a child feel safe and comfortable. Family meals are exercise in team building. The family unit works as support network as everyone shares the most important things in their day. It’s at the dinner table that kids learn about responsibility, good nutrition, respect and sharing. Here are a few helpful ways in which you can get your child talking about what matters most to them.

Negotiation

If your child had a bad day it can be difficult to get them to speak up. Playing a simple game might just get them started, here’s how it works. You tell them something about your day – anything – and they have to tell you one thing in return. Choose something funny to get started and that’ll usually loosen up their defenses.

Get them to be forward by starting backwards

The true and tried techniques of reverse psychology really work. And it’s easy – just tell them you don’t want to hear what they did with their day – keep a lightness in your tone or else they can think you’re just angry.

Let the decompress

Just as with us adults, sometimes it’s nice not to talk. Silent reflection doesn’t always mean something bad. If you only hear complaints about school, check with their mentors – you might find their perfectly happy at school but like letting off steam at home.

Every child is different. Talk to yours and see what works. Time will make you an expert. You’ll know when they’re not talking because they simply need to decompress from a busy day – and when there’s something wrong. Keep the conversation open at dinner, family time is about communicating and sharing.

How to Choose a Quality Electric Face Shield in Five Steps

Are you an electrician who plans to procure a new electric face shield for your welding or electrical installation applications? Here are some of the basic factors you can use to determine whether the equipment will meet the requirements of your applications. You really have to evaluate every single aspect to ensure that it can serve the purpose optimally. Some of these basic elements include:

  1. Can filter radiation

While choosing a quality electric face shield, you have to understand that it was specifically designed to protect you from the electrical arcs. A quality electrical face shield should first have a face shield visor that can filter out radiations. These radiations are produced when an electric arc occurs.  Radiations are hazardous to the eyes and can blind your eyes permanently. Ensure that the face shield that you pick can filter up to 99% of the radiation.

  1. Resistance to high temperatures

Secondly, you have to check on the ability of the electric face shield to withstand very high temperatures. The face shield should be designed and molded out of polycarbonate materials. It should also be equipped with absorbers and should also be made thick.  These characteristic properties are for the purpose of providing maximum thermal protection to the wearer. This is because, while working on electricity, there is a possibility of occurrence of electrical arcs. These arcs can produce sudden extreme temperatures that can burn the face. This is the reason why most of them opt for the polycarbonate face shield visors.

  1. Weight

The third thing that you should consider while choosing an electrical face shield is its overall weight. The face shield should be light in weight.  If you happen to work for longer hours while wearing a heavy face shield, you will end up experiencing neck and shoulder fatigue. Such a situation can even become worse and lead to permanent neck injuries. These pieces of safety equipment are a bit heavy because they designed for maximum protection but during your selection, you should consider one with lesser weight.

  1. Light transmission

Light transmission is another very important factor that needs to be considered while choosing a quality electric face shield.  If you work while wearing a clear and transparent electrical face shield, you will easily be able to see the exact details of the activity that you are undertaking.  A quality electrical face shield needs to have at least a minimum of 60% light transmittance.  This means that you will have the advantage of getting a clear view, while at the same time be able to protect yourself from the electric arc.

  1. Adequate facial and neck space

Lastly, when you go shopping for an electrical face shield, you should pick one that has adequate facial space. One with this quality will provide you with comfort while making head movements. You should also ensure that the shield extends down to provide neck protection. Being in possession of an electric face shield with these qualities guarantee you of ultimate protection from the arc and any other impending electrical hazards.

When you analyze all these aspects individually, you’ll get reliable and dependable electric face shield that will meet all the desired safety standards. Don’t just settle for a reputable brand simply because the company has a good name in the industry.

How Incarcerated Fathers Break the Walls to Maintain Parenthood

A growing child is often equipped with too many questions that almost adults like us don’t like to entertain.  Due to their curiosity, they learned and developed their own thoughts and perception of how things go.  Children who are living with their parents don’t get enough guidance even if they are close to each other and lives in the same roof.  Incarcerated parents specifically the fathers are limited to giving their best parental concern and advice whenever their children have problems or feeling down.  As fathers, we don’t want to let our child suffer the loss of a paternal image on their lives. Which is why, more and more fathers tend to look for the best ways to reach out their children.

Every encounter should be memorable and unforgettable.  Your children won’t probably just as the normal kid they used to be when you were with them outside the jail, but you can bring the good times back.  Surprises and personalized crafts made by your own hands have a great impact on a child’s mind and emotional state.  They become easily drawn to something that would bring joy to them.  The special occasions on your child’s life should not be also forgotten especially graduation and birthdays.  Even if you are not physically visible in his/her graduation rights, be sure to send a letter of how he/she did well in school.

Communication cannot be purely attained without a two-line relationship.  At the first stage or we may say first few months that you were in jail, your children are always sending you updates on what they’re up to or just a mere note of you shouldn’t worry because they are pretty well.  Replying back with a more joyful tone could drive a better establishment of a father to son or father to daughter relationship.  They would surely appreciate every time you’re sending how well you’ve been doing inside and gives them the hope of a sooner chance of being with them.  As snail mails require more time, instant and cheap inmate phonecalls are a good choice to keep up the conversation going.  A longer time is shared through telephone calls and serves as an interactive way but with a personal touch.  Parenthood might be challenging while inside the prison cell, but companies like Offender Connect, Evercom, Comcast, Verizon, AT&T, and others connects fathers and their children all over the state.

Unconditional love is the powerful tool that a father can use to still be a parent to their children.  More than any material thing, fathers should give their time and effort selflessly.  This might be a difficult when your children have grown too far from you and their environment has influenced them in a lot of ways.  Blood is thicker than water and nothing can ever change that.  They will still find their roots and eventually a harmonious relationship will be the fruit of your efforts.

Children And Unmarried Parents

When the matter of child custody and rights to a child evolve, the battle is a long one with unmarried parents. Married parents who get divorced do not have to prove paternity to retain rights, while parents who are not married may be required to prove paternity. A family law lawyer is best to consult with on your rights as a parent and should be consulted before entering into any legal proceedings or filing for custody or child support.

If a child is born out of wedlock, the mother is automatically granted custody unless an adjudication or registration of paternity is filed. For the father to seek custody or visitation rights, he must establish that he is the father of the child through blood tests or DNA tests. Consult with a family law attorney on the best way to obtain a paternity test.

Establishing paternity does not automatically guarantee custody, though. Fathers must obtain a court order if they want to be granted custody of the child; otherwise most courts still assume the mother has custody.

But unmarried fathers who prove paternity and obtain court orders are still entitled to the same rights as a divorced father as long as there are no issues that would make that person a threat to the child such as domestic violence and abuse.

If both partners agree on a custody and visitation plan, the judge will usually sign it and it will become a court order. But in cases where one or both parents do not agree on a plan, the court will resolve the issue. The best way to resolve custody disputes is through the court, as a court order will be a legal document by which both parents must abide.

There are two types of custody that must be discussed. Physical custody refers to who the child will live with permanently, while legal custody refers to who will make decisions about the child’s healthcare, education, religion, etc.

Most custody arrangements grant joint legal custody and sole physical custody with the non-custodial parent given visitation rights. However, if it is determined that one of the parents is unfit to make decisions about the child’s life or it is in the child’s best interest not to have any contact with the other parent, sole physical and legal custody is often granted to one party. Joint physical custody is agreed upon and/or granted in some cases as well.

Unmarried parents with further questions about child custody are encouraged to seek legal counsel to resolve issues.

Parent’s Involvement in Children’s Education

ABSTRACT

The importance of parental involvement as an accelerating and motivating factor in their children’s education is a worldwide-accepted fact. This research project provides an in depth explanation along with specific reasons, the importance of parents’ involvement in their children’s education. It also discusses the parenting techniques, their types and their consequences if neglected. It also describes the ways to measure the outcome of the positive parental involvement. Furthermore, it mentions the teachers involvement and the difficulties faced by the teachers in getting parents involved in their children’s (this is further supported by the examples of two teachers who with their deliberate efforts won the parents over to devote their maximum attention towards their children), single-parent involvement, children’s own efforts to improve their academic levels and joint home-school based interventions. A detailed analysis of the different main ideas is given, based on the findings from other research surveys and projects.

INTRODUCTION:

Parental involvement can be seen to fall into three types: 1) Behavioral, 2) Intellectual and 3) Personal. The research explores the effect of multi-dimensional participation of parents and the resulting progress of children in their studies when different parental resources were dedicated to them. Actively participating parents help their children in their academic development by going to schools and participating in open houses. By keenly observing the behavior of their children they can rightly judge the kind of behavior or the allocation of resources required by their children. Such caring parents can also motivate teachers to become more attentive towards a particular student, thus maintaining the cycle of parent-teacher involvement. Encourage Building up cognitive and perception abilities in a child are a major concern in the upbringing of the child. The way the parents involve their children in cognitive learning is by exposing them to different cognitively stimulating activities and materials such as books, electronic media and current events at home. This helps the child to practice all sorts of language comprehending skills at the school. The results show a remarkably positive behavior at the school and with peers.

Two parenting processes namely the Supportive Parenting (SP) and Harsh Parenting (HP) helped a lot in the research of parental involvement in their children’s education. By adjusting the levels of supportive parenting, different levels of successful outcomes were observed. Supportive parenting in even kindergarten students yielded positive results. Four measures of supportive parenting were used in the study, they were:

1. Proactive teaching.

2. Calm discussion in disciplinary encounters.

3. Warmth.

4. Interest and involvement in peer activities.

The assessments were conducted when children entered kindergarten and when they reached grade 6. There was a factor noted to hinder children’s development: family adversity. It was the result of a multipurpose negative process that included the risk of low socio-economic status, single-parenting and family stress. Child maladjustments were found to be more common in families with such adversities. No matter how much negative impacts were cast, SP was found to overcome the risks associated with family adversity. SP was strongly related to adjustment procedures in grade 6 children who had single parent family or experienced low socio-economic status (SES) in their early childhood.

In a way to socialize their children, parents adopted the techniques of calm discussion and proactive teaching. They helped lessen the behavioral problems by carrying long discussions with their children, cultivating in them a sense of respect, calmness and peace of mind. Mothers also participated actively in reducing the peer stress among their children. It is also a widely accepted fact that supportive parenting plays an important role in the children’s development of empathy, prosocial behavior and emotional competence. On the negative side, the absence of supportive parenting may be related to the development of internal problems such as anxiety and depression.

Lack of the necessary parental care and attention is the main factor for the subsequent rise in the percentage of juvenile delinquency (crime among children). The absence of parental instructions causes children to develop irreversible behavioral and emotional problems. They in order to seek attention, resort to crimes thinking that in this way they could fulfill their wishes. They may revert to uncontrolled violence if not kept an eye upon. Such criminal activities cannot be brought to a halt until their distressing symptoms of low self-esteem, depression, dysphonic mood, tension and worries, and other disturbances are relieved. And the importance of parents’ role in this regard cannot be over-emphasized.

In an effort to describe parental involvement, many researchers use a term “Transition”(Lombardi, Joan). “Transition” is used to describe the time period in which children move from home to school, from school to after school activities, from one activity to another within a pre-school, or from pre-school to kindergarten. The untiring endeavors of teachers in the phenomenon of transition cannot be ignored. They prepared the children and their parents to face the problems of adjusting to elementary school programs that had different psychology, teaching styles and structure than the programs offered at the kindergarten level. In the elementary level schools the teachers had to face serious challenges in motivating the parents to take interest in their children’s activities. The teachers adopted different methods to involve the parents in day-to-day classroom and home activities. They used to send notes, invitation of parent-teacher meetings, invitation of parental guidance sessions and training sessions, continuously directing the parent’s attention towards their children. Patricia Brown Clark suggests that it is very important to keep the line of communication between teachers and parents open, so that the parents can interact with the teachers and get up to date information of their children’s school activities. One way to involve parents is to schedule school events and arranging classroom activities such as volunteering for libraries, acting as classroom aides or efficiently organizing lunch breaks. The teachers also opt for making phone calls at the children’s houses to keep in touch with the parents and getting to know the extent to which they are contributing towards the welfare of their children. Apart from the above activities, the teachers also assign home activities for both the parents and their children so that the parents remain indulged in their children and the children get to study at home. However, it was a bad and disappointing experience for the teachers when many of the parents failed to respond as expected. Many of the parents were so overwhelmed with their official work that they could hardly take out some time for their beloved children.

Moreover, for some parents their schoolings were not positive and character-boosting experiences, therefore they preferred to keep a distance from their children’s school as well. This made it really difficult and at times impossible for teachers to bring the parental involvement to the desired level. Nevertheless, the activities of two teachers proved greatly fruitful in making parents involved in their children. They were Carlos Valdez, an art teacher and 8th grade class sponsor, and Mike Hogan, the school’s band director. They did it by involving parents in music festivals and other school ceremonies. They proved to be great examples for the future teachers to come.

If the children’s academic development programs are to prove successful they must share two characteristics:

1) Developmentally appropriate practice:

A child’s academic progress is clearly reflected by the appropriate practice he/she administers while in school life. During transitions from pre-school to kindergarten, a child if given the exact developmentally appropriate practice tends to learn a great deal of language and playing skills. He develops a keen interest in exploring his environments and interacting (without hesitation) with his adults.

2) Supportive services:

These include the assistance that the school provides to low-income family students. The services include health care, childcare and community care. This strengthens the relation between school and children and creates a sense of security and confidence among the children. They get to learn that their communities are a part of their school since the school’s supportive services strive to help community development.

It is commonly believed that children are good self-teachers. Their self-initiated strategies help improve their expression, creativity, intellectual capabilities and extra-curricular skills. This idea is proved by the documentation of young children’s work provided by Reggio Emilia :

“The Reggio Emilia educators highlight young children’s amazing capabilities and indicate that it is through the unity of thinking and feeling that young children can explore their world, represent their ideas, and communicate with others at their highest level.”(Edwards, Pope. C, Springate, Wright.K)

The climax rests in the fact that how the parents would know that their sincere involvements are really proving worthwhile for their children. The answer lies in the attitude of the children. The degree of parental involvement can be judged by a child’s attitude towards his school subjects, his academic desires and achievements. There is a direct relationship between academic achievements and the attitude towards school. Schunk in 1981 had the following idea of aspiration or academic desires:

“Level of aspiration is defined as one’s subjective probability that he or she will reach a certain level of education.”(Abu, H. & Maher, M)

As a result children who received adequate parental concern were found to be much more confident in their academic desires and achievements than those who could not get the right amount of parental concern. The individual involvement of mothers and fathers also plays a vital role in the behavioral development of a child. Students from one-parent household were observed to show less positive attitude towards schools and studies as compared to students from two-parent households. One study aimed at investigating parental concern showed that despite mothers’ sincere endeavors, the role of fathers could not be ignored and both served as an important foundation for the future progress of the child. This can be proved from the following fact:

According to a recent report from the National Center for Educational Statistics (1997), compared to their counterparts, children with involved fathers are more likely to have participated in educational activities with their parents (e.g., to have visited a museum or a historical site with their parents in the past month), and are more likely to have access to multiple types of resources at home as well (as measured by the proportion of parents who belong to community or professional organizations, or regularly volunteer in the community). (Flouri, E. And Buchanan, A, Pg.142)

Also, the parental involvement has been discussed and implemented in terms of interventions or prevention programs, which are nothing but safety measures taken to assure healthy and perfect upbringing of the child. The study uses school-based and home-only intervention programs to find out the extent of intellectual capabilities found in children from different family backgrounds. The success of one school-based interventions can be proved from the following fact, which was a part of “Education Service Improvement Plan 2001-2005” of Edinburgh:

—-The Scottish Executive Discipline Task Force, which studied the causes of poor behavior among pupils in schools produced a report of ‘Better Behavior – Better Learning’ in June 2001. The report included 36 recommendations for action, which were then turned into an Action Plan in 2002. Many of these have implications for the Education Authority. (Craig Millar Instep Project)

Parenting Tips And Tricks To Simplify Your Life

Our parents were far from perfect. Now that you are a parent you probably realise that you also are far from perfect. Learning from other parents is key to being a good parent, so we’ve supplied you with some answers to a variety of parenting dilemmas.

Show physical affection for your child. Human beings naturally crave touch. Whether it’s a hug or a kiss or just a simple pat on the head, touch can be a great way to connect with and show affection for your child. Touch is especially important when they’re sick or feeling sad, since it will comfort them.

Make sure you don’t overload your child with work. Too many parents keep piling work onto young children and they overload them. Make sure your child has time to play and just relax. It’s important to balance work and play, especially when your child is just starting school. It’s too easy to ask too much of them at once.

If your child has a problem with wetting the bed, it is important that you get the problem addressed as soon as possible. You do not want your child to be a teenager and still wet the bed. There are medications available that help to stop a child from bed wetting.

Try not get your child into the habit of eating fast food frequently. They are going to think this okay, and fast food is very unhealthy. Instead, take them to places that serve healthier foods, such as salads, and sandwiches. When you can, try to make your child a homemade meal.

If you are a new mom of twins, ASK FOR HELP! Not asking for help is one of the worst things that moms of twins do. Having newborn twins is not the same as having one baby. Take anyone and every one’s offer of help whether doing some grocery shopping, running the dishwasher, or just sitting with the sleeping babies for you to get a break. You will be a better mom for it.

When raising teenagers, it may seem as if you are always focusing on the negative things they do. It is important to take some time out and praise them for some of their positive accomplishments. If all they hear is negative, it pushes them down, try some positive reinforcement; you will like the results you get from your teen.

A great parenting tip is to look at the efforts of your own parents as a base to work from and not the only way to raise your child. There’s nothing worse than repeating the same mistakes with your child that your parents made on you. Always strive to come to your own solutions.

Invest in one of the customized music CDs that have your child’s name included in the songs. This will keep their attention as you sit through a long line of traffic. This can be used in long car rides, flights, or even train rides. It will be well worth the investment.Save yourself a step for the midnight awakenings. You just have to put some diaper ointment inside the diaper before you put her bedtime diaper on her. It will make it so you can skip the step of rubbing the ointment on your baby overnight. This one step will get you back to your bed a bit quicker.

Get your little one involved in meal preparation as soon as they are able to handle specific tasks with assistance and supervision. For example, having a toddler help pour ingredients into a bowl can teach basic measurement while allowing you to finish preparing a meal. Just be sure to supervise closely and keep your child away from any dangerous appliances or utensils.

Make snack time healthy by eliminating junk-food from your home. You can satisfy your kid’s sweet tooth with more nutritious fare such as, frozen yogurt and fresh fruit. Make food fun by creating outrageous names for healthy snack; for example, ants on a log is just celery sticks filled with peanut butter and topped with raisins.

It is important to make sure that your child is not watching too much violence on television. Children learn by what they see and if they see too much violence it could make them think that it is acceptable or lose a sense of what is real violence and what is not.

One of the best ways to discipline a child is by putting them in time-out. Stopping them in their tracks and putting them in a spot like a corner will teach them that they cannot do certain things. Before actually putting them in time-out, give them a warning. Then, if they continue to do this behavior, follow through with your threat. Dress

How To Plan The Best-ever Princess Birthday Party

A princess themed birthday party is what most girls fancy growing up. Let her live the fantasy for a day by organizing a birthday bash with a dash of royalty. Plan the party like activities, invitations, return gifts and decorations around her dreams and make it unforgettable for her. No matter how elaborate your plans are, ensure that there are a good many cameras snapping away splendid photographs.

Spruce up the venue with satin ribbons of pink and lavender, or green or pale blue. Or you could put up flag banners. If the party theme is very specific to a princess, then you could get plates, cups and napkins accordingly. Shower confetti as each guest arrives. Children will absolutely love it. Not much is required, unless your doll is gaga about balloons, in which case please ensure that there is no dearth of them.

Assuming that your little lady has her

princess attire ready for the big day, lets look at the activities that you can arrange. Based on your princess’ favorite fairy tale, you can twist around party games around that. Take the piñata game of pinning the tail on the donkey and make it funny. How? Play a game of sticking smoochy lips on a frog! Now that’s a cool spin on a routine party game.

You could also set up a craft station. Each little VIP gets their very own crown. Have cutouts of tiaras ready and offer them color, glitter, stickers, glue. Lay sheets of newspapers on the craft benches with an adult ready to assist the mini-royals and hopefully, it won’t get messy. Crank up the level of excitement by clicking instant pictures of them wearing their own handmade crowns. This can be a great souvenir to take home! Such crafty activities are a great way to keep the kids and their mums engaged together and they are easy on the pocket too.

Settle down the guests with a round of story telling. Let your princess decide on the fairy tale to be narrated. This should give the adults some breathing time to attend to other chores, like clearing away the craft benches and get the food table, gift stations set up and arrange for the cake cutting ceremony.

Remember that princesses like no mess. While cake and ice cream are a given, stock up on finger foods. Wraps with ham-n-cheese or veggies, bite sized sandwiches and pizza, fruit and vegetable tray and cookies should be good add-ons. Keep some adult refreshments for the chaperones too. You can bring in the pink in food too; use pomegranates, cherries, strawberry, beetroots, ripe guavas and make pomegranate popsicles or juice, strawberry and banana and feta cheese on a toothpick, strawberry ice-cream floats over lemon soda, guava jellies and the works!

Irrespective of age, all kids love a favor bag. Make it special by picking up a princess purse adorned with glitter and sequins. Put in a lip-gloss or a glitter nail polish or a small brush and some beady jewelry. Plastic bracelets, beady necklaces, even finger rings will always be appreciated.

Throwing a grand princess party isn’t as daunting as you think. Even on a modest budget, it can be made fun and memorable. The key is to keep your little princess and her friends busy and happy with playful activities, cute gifts and yummy finger food. Don’t forget to take pictures so that your doll can look back with pride and happiness.

A Chuk-Chuk-Choo Birthday Party

Children love trains. Thomas The Train, Chugginton, The Little Engine That Could and many more  – all of them make a great theme for a birthday party celebrations. A variety of party materials, from invitations to goodies, out there in the market can help you plan every detail of the birthday party along this idea.

Buy invitations that are train shaped, or a train ticket or a plain invitation card with a specific train on it would do. Slightly older kids would even dig the old enigmatic steam engines idea for a party setting. Use train shaped banners, make railway tracks around the party area with black tape, use red and green paper flags along the way to setup the ambience.

A birthday party is incomplete without a piñata. A train piñata can be a great warm-up game for the good times to roll.  You can also help the kids dress up with some accessories of a train engineer’s cap, whistle and scarf and click instant pictures of them against a big train banner as a keepsake.  Play a small movie of an entertaining train story or read a favorite one. That should give the adults a little quiet time before the sugar-rush that comes with cake!

There is no dearth of cake forms and train cakes that you can work with to suit your party needs and your little one’s fancy. Choose from any of the popular train characters or favorite movies like The Polar Express or even other train themes. A slice of cake and a cup or cone of ice cream and the train piñata will come in real handy to guarantee a noisy fun-filled time.

This theme is so popular that most party supplies stores will have enough to cater to your needs. Hats, plates, cups, and napkins – all in the train theme will add to the overall party quotient. Use a little imagination with decorations, food, games and party favors to ensure that your child cherishes this day for life.

Party favors are a trend nowadays. Get some good train party bags. Fill them up with coloring books, jigsaw puzzles, train whistles (vengeance for the hooter that your tot came back home with!), storybooks, badges and stickers. Return gifts are a good way of showing appreciation for the gifts received.

A visit to a near-by train museum can make this party memorable. Or you could talk to the local train station or depot to see if an old train or train carriages can be rented out as a party venue. That will be interesting and a huge excitement factor for children. Visit the train station chief and get to know what might be available for a party – maybe a small ride or a train flag-off by the birthday boy/girl? That can be mind-blowing! Mind you, after a terrific party like that, the next year’s one is going to be difficult.

Grammar is most definitely one of the most important part of a child’s education and the Picture Dictionary will do a great job of making a child understand what is going on.

Get into a healthy routine for the school year ahead

New and demanding routines on those first few days back at school can be intimidating for both parents and kids alike. To assist, the Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) offers some tips to help your little ones start off the school year feeling strong:

Play and exercise for better sleep – Research shows that exercising helps you fall asleep faster and stay asleep for longer. This is especially true for kids. Unfortunately, studies show that only seven per cent of kids in Canada get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Make sure your child gets enough sleep every night by encouraging physical activity during the day.

Go organic – Teaching our kids about the benefits of organic foods is almost as important as making sure that they eat breakfast every day. When you buy organic foods, you’re investing in your health and the health of your family, and you’re supporting environmentally sustainable practices. These are all important messages we should be teaching our children.

Add a multivitamin to your mix – Mornings can be busy and hectic. Sometimes kids just don’t have time to eat a full, healthy breakfast to get all the nutrients they need. Supplementing your kids’ diet with a multivitamin might be a good idea to ensure they are getting all the essential nutrients. There are multivitamins formulated for every age, ranging from kids to adults. Speak with your health care practitioner to determine which multivitamin is best for every member of your family.

Pack a brain boosting lunch – Packing the right food for lunch can also play a role in boosting your child’s brain power. Foods that contain poly-unsaturated fats are good for brain health and provide energy. If possible, try to slip avocados or pumpkin seeds into school lunches.

Add omega-3s for brain health – The long-chain omega-3 fats in fish oil have been shown to improve cognitive performance, including improved behaviour, memory, and reading. Getting the right amount of healthy fats during pregnancy and childhood has shown to have a number of benefits for children, including increased intelligence and visual acuity. Omega-3 supplements are available in different forms for children and adults.

Don’t forget about vitamin D – In September, the days get shorter and back-to-school means more time indoors, both of which can lead to a decrease in vitamin D. Children and toddlers need vitamin D to absorb calcium and form strong teeth and bones. It has also been linked to increased immunity and disease prevention. Consider adding a vitamin D supplement formulated for children.

When adding supplements to your child’s diet, it is always a good idea to speak with your health care practitioner. Visit chfa.ca for more information on how to help your child thrive and enjoy a healthy transition back to school this September.

Tips in Choosing a Child Care Centre in Singapore

It is crucial that you pick the right child care centre because this is going to have a significant effect on your child’s learning.

A kid’s formative years are critical. It’s very important that they get proper learning. They need mentors and teachers who can hone their talents and help them develop their personalities. That’s why it’s very important to pick the right child care centre in Singapore.

Child care centres are overseen by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sport (MCYS) of Singapore. It makes sure that all child care centres are licensed and comply with the rules.

When looking for the right child care centre, consider the following guidelines:

How much can you afford or are willing to spend?

Budget is an important factor in choosing a child care centre in Singapore. Remember that this kind of service could be a bit expensive, so make sure that you are financially capable.

Convenience

It’s very likely that you and your spouse are working individuals. That means the most ideal child care centre is something that’s close to either your home or place of work. You’d want a centre that’s close enough to allow you to see your child off. It’s also important to be near the child care centre in case of emergencies.

Is the child care centre licensed?

It’s wise to check if a certain place is licensed or accredited by a government agency. This will eliminate a lot of worry on your part, knowing that your kid’s child care centre is legit and that someone is going to be accountable in case something bad happens. You should also find out how many children the centre is accredited to handle.

You should also check for the centre’s credentials. Drop by one of the candidates and talk to the Manager and find out the following information:

–       Qualifications and certifications of the teachers

–       How do they discipline kids?

–       Are the teachers and aides knowledgeable in first aid or CPR in case of emergencies?

–       How involved and responsive are the administrators to the needs of the clients, staff, and personnel?

These are things you will only figure out if you personally pay a visit to the child care centre. It’s advisable that you round up a list of the ones you’re interested in and then schedule a visit.

A personal visit will provide you with more information about the centre compared to just looking at the centre through its website. Plus, a visit will give you the opportunity to ask all the questions you want.

Pre-school programmes

You have to know what their methods of teaching are. Obtain as much information about their curriculum because it is, after all, the reason why you’re enrolling your kid in there. You need to make sure that you kid learns something.

Is the place safe for your kid?

Your kid is going to be in the centre for several hours most of the week, so it’s naturally going to cause you some paranoia. Parents can’t help but worry about the safety of their kids, especially in the hands of strangers.

Child safety should be priority. When you check out a child care centre in Singapore, make sure that it:

–       Is child-proofed

–       Has an evacuation plan in case of emergencies

–       Has fire exits, fire sprinklers and smoke detectors

–       Has safety gates for areas that can be dangerous like stairs, basements and kitchens

–       Has enough medical supplies and first aid kits

A child will learn everything within the context of Christian beliefs.

A child will learn about the basic principles of the Christian faith. The true understanding of the value of human life and what to do with it. Realize the fact that God has given us a free will in order to seek and love what is true, good, and beautiful. A child will learn how to responsibly practice freedom. Without freedom one cannot speak meaningfully about morality or moral responsibility.

In a public school, due to the importance placed on the process of individualization, makes it harder for children to get the opportunity to learn from religion in an organized way. At a Private Christian School young students can learn in an orderly and beneficial way from religion. The religious education at a Private Christian School seeks to support students to develop their religious identity. Religious tradition such as Christianity involve religious practices such as praying, gathering, taking care of the fellow men, dealing with life and death, or the interpretation of religious stories. In these practices the reality that surrounds us is related to the transcendent reality of God the only reliable tool that is used in their study is the Bible. A student receives all these teachings in a Private Christian School.

Some people believe religion in education has to be about fostering students within a meticulous religious faith system.

Over the years religious education has actively been known to be a strong promoter of the values of genuineness, fairness, honesty, deference for all and care of the environment. Child Care in Nursery and Pre Nursery Schools

A number of nursery and pre-nursery schools have suddenly mushroomed in the capital at an alarming rate. Working parents these don’t mind sending their 12-14 months old to a crèche, as long as it serves the dual purpose of educating their child while they’re at work. Its surprising to watch these ‘babies’ learn the basics of life when they can barely walk and talk.

The concept of a play school doesn’t have anything to do with academics but lots to do with developing the child’s age-appropriate social behavior. Nursery and pre-nursery schools usually have 10-20 children from the same or nearby localities spend 1-2 hours each day under the supervision of Montessori trained teachers.

Play schools lay no stress on the child’s performance but on the contrary emphasizes on child care and the sensory-motor and the social development of the child. It is the playschool that observes whether the milestones of normal growth and development are being achieved by the child or not.

Some well recognized play schools are well equipped with a motor skills room, a drama and theatre room and a language room. Apart from basic toilet-training where children are asked to bring their portable potty bowls, some nursery and pre-nursery schools make the children visit the toilet at frequent intervals as part of their toilet training activity.

Almost all the children in the age group of 1+ and 2+ have an innate sense of imitating adults. This is the concept most play schools operate on. Soft toys and gender oriented toys are provided to children to transfer behaviors used during playtime such as feeding a doll, or combing its hair, a child will soon apply to itself in due course of time.

In a play school the supervisors focus on teaching children the age-appropriate behaviors through observation and imitation.” Though most Nursery and pre-nursery schools adopt the play way method of teaching and helping the children enact nursery rhymes, the children also participate in role-play exercises.” The aim is that each activity at the playschool actually becomes a learning experience for the child.

The children in turn learn how to share their food with others, talk politely, eat with social manners, visit the toilet, control their bladder and open up with people they are otherwise not used to. Brawling children, holding on to their parents on the first day of school is a common sight and nursery and pre nursery schools puts the smile back on their face making them confident little children.

Learn To Read! Does Your Child Need Help?

Learning to read is not a natural skill that a child is born with. Until recent years, reading was thought to develop naturally when a child was ready, or “mature” enough. Today, it is understood that children do not learn to read spontaneously on their own. Many parents think that if their child is intelligent, curious and they read to them a lot, they will learn how to read without any problems. But evidence does not lead educators to accept these assumptions.

To learn to read, children must grasp certain skills necessary for reading. And those reading skills need to be taught explictly. No doubt, there will always be a small percentage of children who manage to learn to read without much explicit instruction. Those children, whether we recognize it or not, are able to teach themselves to read. The important thing to recognize here is that there is teaching involved. Reading is not an innate skill that we are born with. For all but a few children, learning to read requires explicit instruction. Learning to read well means mastering the major components of reading instruction:

  • phonemic (or sound unit) awareness
  • phonics
  • sounding out
  • blending

So yes, to learn to read, your child does need help. Further, if a child enter the first grade without knowing how to read, this is not a cause for concern. The ideal window of opportunity for learning to read is at 4 to 6 years old. However, this does not mean that a 6 year old should be reading texts. It means that this age range is the right time for learning the reading skills that build a student up to the point that he can read texts fluently. Beyond the age of 6 or 7, teaching a child to read is about catching up. As a parent, you should make the effort to be aware of where your child is developmentally. By the age of 4-6, they should be able to identify letters, show interest in reading, complete sentences in familiar bedtime stories, etc. Not enough emphasis can be placed on how important it is for a child to develop reading fluency. If they don’t read fluently, the chances for success, in terms of job skills, financial stability, and academic achievement are greatly deminished. Be aware that for most poor readers, early intervention programs that combine instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, reading fluency, and reading comprehension can increase reading skills to average reading levels.

Autistic Child Care – 7 Tips To Potty Train Your Autistic Child

However, what happens if your child is autistic? The problem is now compounded because if your child’s developmental issues. How big of an issue this becomes is determined on the parent.

It doesn’t have to be a tedious task. There are ways to make the process easier and get your child moving in the right direction. Here is a list of suggestions and things to look for to help you and your autistic child while potty training.

1. Don’t start potty training too early. You have to ensure the child is ready to start. Make sure they know the difference between a wet and a clean diaper. If they don’t understand this important difference, it might be too early to start potty training. Try explaining what a wet diaper is and see if your child can recognize it.

2. Being able to dress themselves is an important aspect. If your autistic child doesn’t know how to take his or her clothes off, potty training is going to be difficult through their clothing. Their motor skills might not be ready yet to start the process. Wait to potty train a child until they can dress themselves, which means being able to pull their pants on and off. This is going to make the process much easier.

3. Potty training doesn’t need to feel like a job for you or your autistic child. Create a reward program. Every time the child goes to the potty offer them something they are going to enjoy. Perhaps a favorite treat or a toy. Anyone else involved in the process should be made aware of the reward system. At the same time, don’t punish your child for an accident. This isn’t going to help the process and will only confuse your child. It’s not good to send mixed signals.

4. Learning your child’s schedule will be helpful. If you are keeping your child on a certain schedule throughout the day, they normally get their diaper changed at the same time. When this happens, sit your child down on the potty and have them go to the bathroom about the same time everyday. Schedules and routines are important to many children with autism. Having a potty schedule could help them in the process.

5. Be patient. This sounds a lot easier than it is, but patience is very important. Your child, and this goes for any child, may not get the hang of it right away. Don’t show frustration and don’t get angry because this might cause the child to regress in potty training.

6. Be consistent. Don’t keep switching from the potty to diapers. This will confuse your child and make it difficult to potty train.

7. Don’t stress out the child by forcing them on to the potty. You want them to get familiar with it for a few days. Keep it in the open where they can see it. By seeing it more often, they will get comfortable with the idea of it.

To reiterate, the single most important factor is patience. All of the other tips go with mom or dad being patient. It might take a few weeks for an autistic child to learn something new. If that’s the case, just stay positive and work with the child as best as you can.

Is Your Child Ready to Learn to Read?

If you have a preschool or kindergarten age child, you may be trying to figure out if your child is ready to read. On one hand, you don’t want to push a child who is not ready. This can often lead to a feeling of failure. On the other hand, if your child is ready to learn how to read, how can you actually know?

First of all, do not approach the notion of teaching your child to read like it is a contest. Whether or not they read before their best friend or at the same time as the neighbor’s son  does not matter. Get that into your head. The fact that your young child can read does not mean they are smarter than the other children and will not necessarily give them any advantage when they enter school.

At What Age is a Child Ready to Learn to Read?

Most children are ready to learn to read somewhere between the ages of 5 – 6.5. If a 5 year old shows no interest in learning letters and phonics, there is absolutely  no reason to push and no reason to be concerned. Actually, pushing too hard, before a child is really ready, can lead to self-esteem problems and can even further delay their desire since they will associate learning to read with a bad feeling instead of a positive feeling. Teaching a child to read is  a process and it actually starts when they are babies. You don’t teach them to read in a few lessons and then one day they start reading books. Learning to read starts out with mastering skills like letter identification. A simple game at the store where your child starts to pick out letters he recognizes on signs is a part of teaching your child to read. Learning to read is not something any parent should leave solely to formal education. From day one, you are exposing your child to language. As they grow, you should be exposing them to written language more and more.

Once a child starts identifying letters they can start figuring out the sounds those letters make.  As basic as it may sound, this is what kids need to do before they are ready to formally learn to read. If you do think that your child is ready to learn to read and you want to get started teaching them, you can test their reading readiness. You can find free reading tests online, for example. Or you may be able to ask your pre-school teacher for help and advice. Once you determine that your child is ready to start learning reading, you may want to work with them using books and worksheets and make up various games that teach phonics. Alternately, you could use a phonics software that provides a full curriculum to follow. These reading programs can be reasonably priced and even allow the child to work on their own. Many great phonics programs and games are available from a variety of sources.

When to teach child chess, how young can a child learn chess

Chess and Geometry – Teaching Kindergarten Chess
Frank Ho

Teacher and founder at Ho Math and Chess Learning Center

After researching the relationship between chess and math for over 10 years, I conjecture that chess is a geometry-based game, which particularly is related to the concept of symmetry. So the way to teach a very young child is perhaps to point out the meaning of symmetry in a practical way, not in a conceptual way. How young can a child learn chess? Often I was asked this question but only found out it is difficult to answer without actually having a conversation with the child or even trying to teach a few simple chess moves then playing a pawn only game. This has to do with a child’s cognitive development. Is the child able to follow a set of rules, which to a child is very abstract and perhaps presents no particular meaning to them? For example, a child as young as 5 can play some toys which required to be moved in linear fashion but to the same young child, the moves of a pawn to forward one or 2 squares at the first move and can only capture opponent’s piece in diagonal way is not very comprehensible.

Why a pawn can only capture in a diagonal way while other pieces can capture in their “regular” way of moves? Why knight jumps but not others? These reasons behind these moves can not be understood by most kindergarteners. This presents a challenge for those who want to teach chess to children as young as 4 or 5 years old.

Often, I was asked by parents why their children could play some puzzle type hands-on activities on their own, but not chess? The reason is that the way of playing chess is very different from some puzzle games. Chess is a game with rules to follow and there is no chance for exploring in hands-on approach like other puzzle-type games. If the rule of making chess pieces moves are not followed then there is no game, there is no compromise. A wrong or illegal move will draw complaints from the opponent. In contrast, most puzzle activities have no serious cause-result effects and there is no competition involved, young child is able to carry out the puzzle task with great margin of errors. This is at least part of the reasons that a child can perhaps play some puzzle type of games, but not chess. Chess requires the rules to be strictly followed with no errors.

The dynamics of chess positions and the thrill of being able to capture opponent’s pieces as their “rewards” has fascinated many young children asking for more games.

Is the child able to follow chess rules? If the answer is yes then the child is capable to learn as far as its mental ability development is concerned. The child is ready to accept the concept that a pawn can only take other pieces in a diagonal way however it seems to be abstract to them. This cognitive development is a very important milestone for a young child, it also means that the child is ready to do some work in abstraction that is they might be able to tackle the work of using symbols to do some reasoning or logic work.

At Ho Math and Chess, we have created a Symbolic Chess Language (SCL) which is to serve as a command language to link chess and math so a child as young as 4 or 5 can work on some math and chess integrated problems to help them further develop their high order thinking ability.

The set of workbooks created by Ho Math and Chess is not only to help child develop proficiency in basic math skills, but also intellectually to develop their cognitive ability in critical thinking skill. More information on math and chess

Why Should Play Tents Be Considered for Your Child?

Why choose play tents when electronic video games and computer games seem to be a popular pick these days for toys by and for children? It is important to realize that childhood includes the formative years when a child’s development of motor skills, mental and social skills emerge through play at this time in their lifetime of learning. Play tents providing this type of learning environment for children to learn these skills, are considered to be a purposeful, productive pick in a toy for a child.

Although electronic hand-held video games may assist with eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills development in children, gross motor skills for more total body coordination can be enhanced by children crawling in and out of the play tents and through the connecting tunnels. While playing inside these play structures children can learn to realize in their mind where their body is physically and spatially in relation to the other children with whom they are playing. It may seem a simple concept; however, it is basic as well as necessary for a child’s development as they grow to become friends not intruding on one another’s space.

What is more, play tents encourage cooperative play among children. Each play house tent and tunnel is designed to be large enough for more than one child to play in, so children can learn to interact with each other. While playing inside these playtime products, there can even be space left over to include some of the children’s favorite toys and other play stuff. In comparison to electronic devices providing fun by means of a computer screen that is impersonal, play tents provide meaningful play between children on an interpersonal level of communication.

Similarly, unlike video or computer games, they are creatively designed to stimulate children’s imaginations to pretend to be anything they want, anywhere they want. Designed of high quality for indoor and outdoor use, the tents also come with their own carry bag that makes them easily portable. Protection from outside elements can be offered by these playtime products. Although they are toys, at the same time they offer a place to play in the cool shade away from the direct rays from the sun when used for playing outside on hot days. Since they are interchangeable, children can be creative and connect them to create a maze of play tents and tunnels winding through their own play space that becomes their land of make-believe!

Anger Management for Teens: Self Help Steps to Control Your Emotions

Anger is unavoidable. Feelings of anger are triggered by factors in our environment and are accompanied by certain physiological reactions. Anger management focuses on the negative expression of these feelings. When one externalizes anger, one can mistreat the world around him.

Teenagers have a unique experience with anger. Adolescence is a major growth stage emotionally, socially and physically. Teenagers go through this stage without the benefit of a fully mature brain. Thus, their understanding and ability to self-regulate their emotions is often difficult. There are, however, several ways in which teenagers can gain better control of anger management. Managing anger involves becoming aware of the physiological “signals”, such as blood pressure and heart rate, before the thinking part of the brain is bypassed and the action part of the brain is engaged.

Following are some of the concepts I offer teens:

    1. It takes 10 steps before you “lose” your temper. Here’s an example: If I throw a ball to you, you catch it. However, if you were two-years-old, it might hit you in the face. Through trail and error, you have learned to lift your hands up, cup your hands, keep your eyes on the ball, bring your hands together at the right moment, press hard enough to keep the ball in your hands and suddenly you have caught the ball.-This “catching the ball” technique took months or maybe years to master. In the same way, learning techniques to control your anger takes time to learn. Let’s take a look at how we can break down the way we react in a situation to see how we might handle our anger differently:

-You ask your mom if you can go out while thinking to yourself: “She won’t let me.” You feel sick to your stomach, your heart races. You feel hot and angry and you’re ready for a fight. A little too rudely, you ask your mom if you can go out. She responds to your tone of voice and says “no.”

-You explode and scream, “I knew you were going to say that!”

-You go to your room and slam the door. You kick the bed and throw yourself down and think hateful thoughts.

In order to begin to control your anger, you need to deconstruct your behavior and see all these “steps” you’ve gone through.

    2. Prevention is the best medicine. If you understand step 1 and step 2 of your angry reaction, you can prevent steps 3, 4 and 5 from happening. Awareness is the key. Catching yourself before those other steps occur takes practice (like a child learning to catch a ball). You need to find a way to prevent yourself from going too far. In our example, from the moment you thought about asking your mom for permission to go out, you felt and behaved angrily. You need an alternative plan. One alternative during the early stages of anger is to pause and tell yourself, “I’ve got to break this pattern. Acting this way solves nothing. I don’t feel good when I get distressed. I need to calm down and then cope with what I’m feeling.” How do you do that?
      • Take a deep breath. This allows you the opportunity to plan a different conversation with your mother.
      • Use an external “reminder” to “stop, look, and listen” to different behavioral options. For instance, wearing a certain bracelet, ring or band can be a reminder for you that you need to stop long enough to consider the outcome of the path you are on.
      • Give yourself a break. Go outside for a bit. Take 10 deep breaths. Go to your room, lie down and listen to music. Write a page in your journal. Any of these techniques will allow you the “space” to talk yourself through the problem at hand.
    3. Like that child learning to catch the ball, it takes time to learn to control your behavior. In the event that you reach the point of losing your temper and expressing your anger, you need a plan as well. Some have found the following techniques as helpful at times like these: going for a run, punching a pillow, or throwing a ball. Screaming into your pillow can be more productive than screaming at your mother. These physical releases can produce a calmer state in which you can take a look at what led to the angry response and make a plan for the next time it happens.
    4. Finally, write yourself a letter. Tell yourself the situations that trigger your anger. Describe the first steps as you move towards an angry outburst. Then, describe alternative plans for calming yourself and dealing reasonably with your anger. Give specific behavioral options that you’ve learned and calm you down at that stage. Also include plans for safe releases of your anger if it goes too far. This letter should be available at all times. Your own words can be your best coach when you feel circumstances getting out of control.

Swing Time: The Pinata at your Quinceanera

Vive el pinata! As a little girl, you might have had a pinata at your birthday celebrations and possibly even at other special times. Now it’s a great way for your Quinceanera guests to have a little old-school fun. Pinatas can make a great activity for just the small children at your fiesta, a special little bit of competition for your chambelanes (or damas!) and even something the whole crowd can enjoy.

Pinatas has grown with the times, too, becoming more elaborate and stylish as audiences grow more sophisticated. They’re not just shaped like burros anymore, either! The latest and most fashion-forward pinatas can meet a variety of Quinceanera celebration motifs. Some pinata manufacturers make pinatas of everything from dragonflies to elephants. One pinata artist even built a replica of the Eiffel Tower in Paris! The history of the pinata Pinatas have a long and elegant tradition steeped in the celebrations of everyday people. The pinata started in Mexico, and may date back to the ancient Aztec empire. The earliest kinds were probably clay pots built to please the rain god Tlaloc, and were filled with water rather than candies or toys. Another version has the first pinatas built to appease the war god Huitzilopochtli. As Mexico gradually converted to Catholicism, these rituals were phased out but the pinata remained as a fun way to celebrate festivals and special events.

More recently, the pinata became popular in the United States during the early 1980s. Many American grocery stores and party supply outlets still carry them on a regular basis.

What kind of pinata is right for you? The ideal pinata will express and accent your Quinceanera celebration theme or design motif. This can be accomplished with its shape or even just by having a matching color scheme.

You might want to specialty order you pinata if you’d like something a little unusual than what’s available in local stores. Mexican grocery stores may carry something a little more off the beaten path. There are also stores in Mexico and Central America, called pinaterias, that sell their merchandise online.

Do you have to break the pinata? Actually, no you don’t! A new kind of pinata called a pull-ribbon pinata allows you to keep the custom pinata as a souvenir of your Quince celebration. The pinata is rigged with several ribbons, which guests pull. Only one ribbon will pull a trap door set inside the pinatas bottom, however. When the ribbon is pulled, the gifts inside rain down – but the pinata itself is safe and in one piece.

The pull-ribbon technique is a great alternative for children playing indoors, and for older Quince fiesta guests who might not feel comfortable swinging a stick. And of course, it saves the pinata itself. You can modify any pinata to the pull ribbon approach in just a few short steps, too.

After hours of fun have been spent pretending to be on an imaginative journey during their play day among play tents and tunnels, bed tents provide a creative place for children to dream about their play day adventures. They can also create the desire in a child to want to sleep in their own bed, the child as well as the parents a good night of peaceful sleep!

Therefore, parents as well as children can appreciate the value of play tents that provide hours of pretend play, while at the same time the coordination of physical, mental and social skills developmentally can be gained by children as they emerge from their childhood toward their adolescent years. It is not a pretense play tents, as mentioned in these ways, can benefit children as they develop into becoming preteens. Since time may be of essence, and before the child in your life reaches adolescence, consider having your child play in play tents today!

Why is Learning the Alphabet Important for Learning Languages?

Learning the alphabet of a language is a simple concept, but it is the most important stage of a human being’s literacy development. Usually, the alphabetic principle states that there are individual letters, or combinations of letters, in order to represent the regular sounds of speech. Through human knowledge of the alphabet of a particular language, a person can read or speak words that are otherwise unfamiliar to them.

The Latin alphabet is the most common set of letters that are used by major languages such as English, Spanish, French, and German. Although there other important languages that are not using the Latin alphabet, such as the Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, Russian, and Hindi, learning the Latin alphabet as early as possible is important; it could be the main key for a person in learning another language as well.

Why is learning the alphabet so vitally important in the early development of a human being?

Learning the alphabet is fundamental for learning to read; on the other hand, without an accurate knowledge of letters, children will definitely have serious difficulty in the early stages of literacy. Letter recognition and phonemic awareness are the two most essential predictors of reading ability. Learning the alphabet is the main foundation of a written language, while phonemes provide the knowledge of oral language. Thus, when alphabetic knowledge and phonemic awareness are applied together in human literacy, a child has the potential to become a good reader and communicator.

When a child begins kindergarten, he or she undergoes many helpful exercises conducted by their teacher. This would enable the children to recognize many letters, usually by showing them random letters, one at a time, and analyzing a child’s responses. However, entering kindergarten doesn’t entirely mean that the child would learn immediately, without risk factors. Study show that 50% of all children entering kindergarten have one or more risk factors that may create significant reading problems for the student.

Knowledge of alphabetic letters before formal reading instruction is one of the strongest predictors of children’s reading ability, and thus, parents and teachers should not neglect the essential contributions of this early stage of learning for their children.

Outside from school, there are simple and yet fun activities with which parents can help their children sustain and help the literacy development of their children. Children’s books and technology are great contributors in helping students develop their knowledge.

Children’s appropriate alphabet knowledge is a helpful step for the students to understand and to encourage them to learn other languages. Although learning other languages that don’t use Latin alphabet requires other practices, however, the Latin alphabet helps the student understand other languages in pronouncing foreign words by converting its original pronunciation into an easier form, using the Latin alphabet letters.

Step 3: Find Keywords associated with each of your hiding spots: Let’s take our first hiding spot from our outdoor sample game above, Mailbox. The key to making good clues is to think of words that you might associate with this hiding spot. Here are some words that come to mind: letters, packages, mailman, flag (on the box), post, delivery, sender, communicate, stamps, etc. These will be your “keywords” for making your clue.

Step 4: Find Rhyming Words: Next, choose one of the keywords that we just came up with and write down words that rhyme with it. For example, if we choose “stamp” from our keyword list above, we can come up with the rhyming words – ramp, champ, lamp, damp, camp. I like “champ”, because I can then say, “you can be a champ!”

Step 5: Putting your Clue together: Use your keywords and your rhyming words to make your clue. The difficulty level of your clues should be adjusted to be age appropriate for your hunters. For younger children your clues should be pretty evident, and conversely a little trickier for older children and teens
Let’s go through an example that I’ve created for younger players for the mailbox hiding spot, using the keyword – stamp – and the rhyming word – champ. Notice I was able to incorporate 2 additional keywords – delivered & letters –from our keyword list into the clue, as a little extra hint. (Always a good idea for younger players)

“Find the next clue to become the champ,
Where letters get delivered with a stamp.”

Now let’s try creating a harder clue for teens and older children. This time I’m going to work with the primary keyword “sender”. My rhyming words include bender, lender, tender, slender, spender. I choose “tender” because it makes me think of love letters!

“Where you might receive words that are tender,
Created by a secret admiring sender”

This clue is a little more complex, in that hunters must first figure out that we’re talking about a love letter, before they can figure out that a letter would be received in the mailbox!

Now that you have the basic process down, you can continue forward creating clues for each of your 10 hiding spots one by one until you have an entire hunt ready to go!

Step 6: Set up your hunt: Once you have all of your treasure hunt clues prepared. Remember that you will have to hand the first clue to the children at the start of the hunt. So, if the first clue leads to the mailbox, the clue in the mailbox must lead somewhere else. (DON’T put your “mailbox” clue in the mailbox!) Hide the clues one-by-one as you walk yourself through the hunt so that you don’t get confused.

If you don’t have the time to create your own treasure hunt game. You can leave this part of your party planning to someone else, as there are great affordable ready-to-play treasure hunt games available online. Have a great treasure hunt party and happy hunting to all!

Keep Safe with Kids Electric Scooters

Kids electric scooters are a great way for your kids to have fun, keep active and gain a little bit of that all important independence.

Although they don’t travel at breakneck speed, most parents know that their children perhaps don’t always think of safety first. That’s why if you’re thinking of purchasing a kids electric scooter for your child you need to ensure that they will be safe in the event of the inevitable odd fall, scrape or tumble.

Firstly you need to make sure that if your children are going to be out on the pavements where there is traffic that they have a very good understanding of road safety. Make sure that they know how to stop, look and listen and explain to them just how dangerous it could be to be out on the road.

Your children should also be aware of pedestrians when using a kids electric scooter. Other pavement users can get very irritated by kids electric scooters whizzing past them. In addition if children aren’t careful about looking where they are going and controlling their speed that can end up having a collision. Unfortunately it’s vulnerable people such as the elderly and young children that are most likely to be affected and to get involved in a collision. So make sure that your kids are considerate and keep the needs of pedestrians in mind.

When your children use kids electric scooters they should always wear protective clothing. Most importantly this should include a helmet. It’s advisable to buy the helmet from a reputable store as then you can be sure that it will have undergone all the appropriate safety checks and be fit for purpose. However if you are not sure then simply look for the CE mark which guarantees that the helmet has been certified as safe for sale in the EU.

Your child should also wear protective wrist and knee guards to protect hands, wrists and knees. These are essential as in the event of a fall hands, wrists knees, head and face are the most likely areas of the body to be injured.

Although you may find your child complaining about having to wear protective apparel you should ensure they definitely wear it otherwise they could find themselves with a serious injury.

Lastly you need to ensure that your child wears appropriate footwear when riding kids electric scooters. In the summer particularly many children wear sandals or flip flops but these can be quite hazardous and can impede their ability to ride a scooter safely. The best footwear to choose is trainers.

Abilities Every Parent Need To Master

Few people will try to make the claim that parenting isn’t that complicated but, like everything else out there, you can cultivate certain skills that will help you become more effective at the task. It’s easy to assume that you’re making the right parenting choices when everything is going well. If you’re running into difficulties, however, you may need to work on some of your parenting skills.

Consistency is incredibly important when it comes to child discipline. This is not an easy quality for many parents to display, but if you lack it you can be sure your children will not take your directives very seriously. You need to think long and hard about the rules and consequences you set up: do not make threats or promises that you do not intend to keep. If you’ve taken your child’s television privileges away for the week, you have to stick to this. When you give in you tell your kids that your word isn’t worth much and that it can safely be disregarded. Children will, of course, test your resolve, so you have to be firm.

Every single parent is going to feel frustrated, mad or even just overwhelmed sometimes. Take a break when you feel this way. You need to put some provisions in place so that you have options for childcare when you need a little breather. This can be a babysitter or it can be your friend or someone to whom you are related (or even your partner). Ideally you should have a lengthy list of people you can count on as not everyone is going to be available all the time. Even if you’re not at your breaking point yet, it is important to take time for yourself sometimes. Sometimes you don’t need a lot of time for this, just fifteen minutes spent walking around your block can be enough to help you feel refreshed. You’re going to be a better parent if you allow yourself to take time and not try to be perfect 24/7.

As a parent there are going to be some styles that come naturally to you but, particularly if you tend to vacillate between extremes, there are some styles that deserve some modification. Parents, to use one example, who were raised in very strict and authoritarian homes tend to be strict and authoritarian themselves. In today’s society, however, kids need to be able to think for themselves and when you are too strict, the kids either become far too obedient and docile or they become rebellious early on. On the other hand, if you are too permissive with your kids, they won’t ever learn boundaries and will probably grow up without much self discipline.

Studies show that kids thrive the most in an environment run with “authoritative parenting” which is partly authoritarian and partly permissive. There are lots of parenting skills that can help make your job a lot easier while simultaneously helping your kids learn very important life lessons. It is also important to learn how to apply these skills in ways that are good for your son or daughter’s age and personality. You are only human, as are your kids and we all are able to learn and grow both from the mistakes we make as well as the successes we enjoy.

These parenting techniques can be quite useful for you and for your child, nevertheless they might not do the job if you have troubles with the marriage.

In the event you and your partner experiencing partnership troubles that could have an impact on your son or daughter and also your marriage, then look into the advice below for some recommendations.

How a Great Tutor Can Help Your Child

This post is intended as a guide for mothers and fathers on the way to tell if your child would benefit from an English or maths tutor. We also talk about how a suitable tutor can assist your child, along with the advantages of enrolling at a learning centre. Despite the fact that you may not reside in Cambridge, these guidelines apply wherever you are in the UK.

Essentially the most frequent motive for seeking out a tutor is that the parent has concerns about their child’s education. For many parents, the issues are usually in the subject of maths and English since these 2 are crucial for success in so many other areas of education and in the workplace. The main concern is that the child is behind for their age. There are many ways by which this can happen (missing school due to illness, moving home, large class sizes and so on). A skilled tutor will be able to spot precisely where help is needed (spelling, arithmetic, phonics etc) and deliver that assistance is the most efficient way.

Another reason tutors are sought after is to get ahead. In today’s competitive climate, students with an academic edge will be at a distinct advantage to their peers. To get on the ladder in the more competitive careers, better grades leads to better prospects.

Unfortunately it is far too easy to give up and loose interest in maths and English. Once this takes place both children and parents can become frustrated which makes the circumstances worse. If this happens to your child it really is important to do something soon before they fall too far behind. Acting early on is preferable to leaving things too late, as problems are easier fix when treated sooner rather than later. Maths and English are the 2 most important subjects to master. If you lack basic literacy and numeracy skills acquiring decent work opportunities is going to be hard. Entrance into higher education, college and selective schools will be impossible.

As professional teachers we love tutoring in schools. We consider school life is an important part of growing up for a variety of reasons. We learn to be social and make friends, we determine what is acceptable conduct, we learn to stand on our own 2 feet without mum and dad. Additionally to all that, we learn to read, write, spell, add up, subtract and so on. This post is not the place to figure out the complex issues of our educational system that results in 25 – 30 kids per class. But the fact of the matter is that most of our children do attend schools with large class sizes. Because of this it is inevitable that some children fall behind. The benefits of a private tutor are quite simple – they allow children to catch up.

The most successful private tuition system involves the actual presence of a tutor. This is essential if the nuances of the individual student are to be identified. Can a person on the other end of a web connection actually spot how your child is holding their pen? Can they pick up on the small facial expressions and body language that conveys what the student if feeling about a particular topic? No. The internet is a marvellous invention. It has radically altered the way we live, work and play. However, it is not the magic formula for everything. It cannot substitute a live human being who is qualified and experienced in the ways of educating young people. For this reason avoid online tuition schemes and have your child attend a learning centre.
